La Clemenza Di Tito: Drottningholm Court Theatre

Vitellia wishes to marry Emperor Titus, and asks her lover Sextus to assassinate him when she hears of his plans to marry someone else. However, Sextus' friend Annius arrives with the news that Titus has changed his mind, and the plot is called off. Annius wants to marry Sextus' sister Servilia, but Titus announces that he now wishes to marry her. When Titus learns of Annius' love for Servilia, he stands down, but Vitellia, thinking the marriage is going ahead, again asks Sextus to assassinate Titus. An 'opera seria', La Clemenza di Tito is a form of strict patterns and rules, which provided Mozart with an apt framework for the noble music and virtuoso singing which the aristocracy wanted to hear. Performed at the Drottningholm Slottseater, Stefan Dahlburg and Anita Soldh take the lead parts.

Le Grande Macabre: La Fura Dels Baus

Michael Boder leads the Orchestra and Chorus of Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu in this inaugural recording of György Ligeti's only opera, staged, in their usual distinctive way, by Spain's La Fura Dels Baus. A mixture of popular theater, comics, pop art, cabaret, caricature and the Apocalypse, the work centres around an imaginary land inspired by the famous Dutch painter Pieter Brueghel the Elder. After announcing the end of the World, Nekrotzar, the Grand Macabre, is surprised to find that people refuse to let thoughts of impending death ruin their lives. This visually imaginative production, recorded in 2011, features an all-star cast including Chris Merritt, Inés Moraleda, Ana Puche, and Werner Van Mechelen.
