Thus begins a plot of intrigue and mistaken identity.

The Royal Opera give this live performance of Benjamin Britten's work portraying the relationship between Queen Elizabeth I and the Earl of Essex. The Queen is played by Susan Bullock and the Earl by Toby Spence with the rest of the cast including Patricia Bardon, Kate Royal, Clive Bayley, Mark Stone and Jeremy Carpenter. Paul Daniel conducts the Royal Opera House Orchestra and Chorus.
