Gritty drama written and directed by Barbara Loden in which she also stars as the titular character. A series of encounters with cruel and dangerous men follow and, after going to a bar and mistaking robber Norman Dennis Michael Higgins for the bartender, she goes on the run with him until an ill-advised bank robbery ends in a shootout. Unhappy and directionless, Wanda divorces her husband, relinquishes her rights to her children and loses her job.
For Wanda though, there is no easy escape from her bleak existence.
